Aledo stops No. 25 Lake Travis and 48-game win streak; Rutgers-bound back Chevelle Buie leads Cocoa to win over No. 5 Abilene.
The nation's third-longest active win streak came to an end Friday night in Austin where
Aledo (Aledo, Texas) knocked off
Lake Travis (Austin, Texas) 14-10 to break a 48-game win streak by the Cavaliers.

And just up the road, fifth-ranked Abilene saw its 17-game streak go down to a another streaking team from Florida, Cocoa.
Aledo's
Johnathan Gray
scored on fourth-and-goal from the 1-yard line with six minutes left in
the game to hand Lake Travis its first loss since Sept. 7, 2007, when
it fell to Westlake by a 28-21 margin. The Cavaliers played Friday's
contest without standout quarterback
Michael Brewer, who left last week's game with a shoulder injury.
Despite Brewer's absence, Lake Travis held a 10-0 lead in the first half on a 9-yard touchdown pass from
Colin Lagasse to
Griffin Gilbert.
Aledo,
the defending Texas 4A Division II champion, upped its win total to 16
games in a row with the victory. Lake Travis is the three-time defending
4A Division I champion.
Plymouth (Plymouth, N.H.)
holds the longest current win streak in the nation at 56 games.
Plymouth opened its season last week with a 35-7 win over Monadnock
(East Swanzey, N.H.).
Reidsville (Reidsville, N.C.) is second at 52 wins in a row after winning tonight against Northeast Guilford 20-14.
Speaking of streaks, one ended and another continued in the Florida vs. Texas Football Showcase at Eagle Stadium in DeSoto on Friday night.
Cocoa (Fla.) proved once more that it is more than battle tested with a 24-21 upset over fifth-ranked
Abilene (Texas) as
Chevelle Buie scored a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns to wipe away a 10-point deficit.
According to oaoa.com, Buie, a Rutgers commit, scored on runs of 75 and 35 yards in the final 7:20 to pull out the victory. He finished with 116 yards on 13 carries.
He also caught a 78-yard touchdown pass from
Latravious Campbell with 4:26 left in the third quarter.
Abilene, which played without star running back
Herschel Sims, out with a separated shoulder, came in ranked No. 5 in the MaxPreps.com Xcellent 25 and No. 7 in the MaxPreps Freeman rankings.
The defending Texas state Class 5A champion came in with a 17-game win streak, the longest among 5A schools in Texas.
Cocoa, which came in unranked, won its 27th straight game and third in a row this season over an out-of-state foe, beating Olive Branch (Mississippi) 14-7 in its opener and 43-7 over Thomas Jefferson of Pittsburgh last week.
Sims’ cousin
Ronnell Simsl played a whale of a game at quarterback for Abilene, completing 17 of 26 for 277 yards and two touchdowns. Nine of those completions went to
Darius Joseph, who finished with nine catches for 188 yards and a 49-yard TD early in the second quarter to put Abilene up 10-0.
But
Cody Bell drilled a 44-yard field goal just before the half to give Cocoa some momentum, before Buie went to work.
His touchdown catch tied the game at 10-10, before Abilene went out in front 13-10 on
Christian Valerio's second field goal, a 32-yarder with 7:39 to go.
That’s when Buie really made his mark, busting loose for TD runs of 75 and 35 yards on consecutive drives to essentially put this one away. Abilene showed heart, scoring on a 22-yard pass from Sims to
Jeret Smith with 1:36 to go.
But Cocoa held on to represent Florida well again with its long time rivalry with Texas. Three more games in the series are scheduled for today from DeSoto.
Denison (Texas) takes on Glades Central (Belle Glade, Fla.), Madison (Dallas) plays Central (Miami) and DeSoto (Texas) hosts Miramar (Fla.).
