High school basketball: Gonzaga signee Braden Huff, No. 8 Glenbard West bury Whitney Young for Illinois Class 4A state title

Future Bulldog scores 19 points points to lead Hilltoppers to first state title.

Ranked No. 8 nationally this week by MaxPreps, Glenbard West (Glen Ellyn) dominated Whitney Young (Chicago) 56-34 Saturday night to capture the Illinois Class 4A state championship, completing an unbeaten run against in-state competition this season.

The Hilltoppers were led by 6-foot-11 senior forward Braden Huff, who helped the program bring home its first state title by tallying 19 points, five assists and three rebounds. Paxton Warden connected on 8 of 10 field goal attempts en route to a game-high 21 points.

Northern Illinois-bound forward Xavier Amos led the way for Whitney Young (25-9), which was denied a fifth state crown.

Glenbard West (37-1) rose to the occasion all season against the top teams in Illinois, beating Whitney Young by 16 in the first meeting between the two teams in January, storied Simeon (Chicago) by 28, Class 1A state champion Yorkville Christian (Yorkville) by 25 and Bolingbrook by 30 in the semifinals. The Hilltoppers won every postseason contest by 20 points or more.

The lone blemish for Glenbard West came on a buzzer beater against California power Sierra Canyon (Chatsworth) in early February.
