Baseball Recap: Elkhart Takes a Loss

After flying high against Chapel Hill on Thursday, Elkhart came back down to earth. The Elkhart Elks came up short against the Overton Mustangs on Friday, falling 12-2.

Coyt Cooper put in work while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, pitching two innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off one hit. Cooper was also solid in the batter's box, going a perfect 2-for-2 with one triple and two RBI. That triple was his first of the season.

Cooper wasn't the only one making solid contact as two players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Nicholas Rodriguez, who scored two runs while going 1-for-1. Rodriguez is becoming a predictor of Elkhart's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is 3-1 (and 0-5 when he doesn't).

Elkhart has traveled a rocky road recently having lost four of their last five games. That's put a noticeable dent in their 3-6 record this season. The win was the fourth in a row for Overton, bringing their record for this year to 5-2.

Looking ahead, Elkhart will be playing in front of their home fans against Groesbeck at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. This will be Elkhart's first chance to prove their worth in the conference. As for Overton, they will take on Arp at 9:00 a.m. on Thursday.
