Game recap: Early lead takes Claxton high school football team past Portal

Claxton (Ga.) jumped out to an early lead against Portal (Ga.) and never looked back on the way to a 43-6 victory on Saturday.

The Tigers scored 12 points in the first quarter. Claxton scored on a touchdown pass by Tanner Lee to Zachaeus Grant and a Lee touchdown pass to Grant.

CHS was up 31-6 at the half after taking the lead on a Lee touchdown pass to Grant in the first quarter.

The Tigers expanded their lead to 37 points entering the fourth quarter. Claxton scored two times in the third, including once on a passing touchdown.



CHS's standout player in the win was Grant. The sophomore running back ran for one touchdown and caught two touchdowns.

The Panthers' lone touchdown came on a 13-yard pass in the second quarter.

The Tigers entered the contest giving up 24.0 points per game this year.

A 18-9 Claxton victory was the result when the squads faced off last season.

The win was a nice bounce back for CHS, which lost to Savannah Christian last week, 24-14.

Portal (0-6) goes up against Savannah Christian in a A Region 3A game matchup next week, while Claxton (4-2) locks horns with Savannah Country Day also in a A Region 3A game.
