Basketball Recap: Mays Extends Winning Streak to Five

Mays waltzed into their game on Friday with four straight wins... but they left with five. They enjoyed a cozy 91-77 win over the M.L. King Lions. Given the Raiders' advantage in MaxPreps' Georgia basketball rankings (they are ranked 60th, while the Lions are ranked 334th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Leading Mays to victory were Clayton Coppock and Jack Sparks. Coppock dropped a double-double with 25 points and 11 rebounds, while Sparks dropped a double-double with 22 points and 12 assists. The dominant performance gave Coppock a new career-high in boards. Another player making a difference was Davenport Cox, who dropped a double-double with 19 points and 13 rebounds.

Mays smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 23 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive boards in 39 consecutive matchups dating back to last season.

Despite the loss, M.L. King still got an impressive performance from Emontae Gourdine, who went 8 of 15 on his way to 22 points. The team also got some help courtesy of Calvin Everhart iii, who dropped a double-double with ten points and 11 boards.

Mays' victory bumped their record up to 16-7. As for M.L. King, they are on a three-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 7-17.

Mays didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 101-64 win against Creekside on the 4th. As for M.L. King, they have also already played their next game, a 56-55 victory against Forest Park on the 4th.
