Softball Recap: Shaker Turns Things Around After Road Loss

There's no place like home for Shaker, who bounced back after a loss on the road last Friday. They came out on top against the Guilderland Flying Dutchmen by a score of 6-2 on Monday. For the Bison, this counts as revenge for the 5-1 win the Flying Dutchmen walked away with the last time they faced one another back in May of 2024.

Hannah Hipwell made a splash while hitting and pitching. She tossed four innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off three hits. She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts any time she's pitched this season. She was also big at the plate, scoring a run while going 2-for-3. That run marked the first that she scored this season.

In other pitching news, Talyn Chernosky looked comfortable as she pitched three innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. She has been consistent recently: she hasn't given up more than one hit in three consecutive appearances.

Back at the plate, the team relied heavily on Sarah Syden, who scored two runs and stole a base while getting on base in all three of her plate appearances. That stolen base was her first of the season. Another player making a difference was Ruby Szemplinski, who went 1-for-3 with two RBI and one double.

Shaker's victory was their fourth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 5-1. The home wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 8.0 runs over those games. As for Guilderland, their loss dropped their record down to 2-2.

Looking ahead, Shaker will challenge Pine Bush at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Guilderland, they will face off against Niskayuna at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday.
