Basketball Recap: Madison Highland Prep Comes Up Short

Madison Highland Prep has been a dominant force so far, but they're in the middle of a mini-slump at the moment. They fell 88-79 to the Camp Verde Cowboys on Friday. Despite running the score up even higher than they did in their prior game last Wednesday (63), the Heat still had to take the loss.

When it comes to explaining why Madison Highland Prep lost, don't look at Roy Chavez. Despite the final result, he went 11 for 15 to rack up 27 points along with eight assists and three steals. Those 27 points gave Chavez a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Cade Carlstrom, who almost dropped a double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds.

Chavez wasn't the only one working in the assist department: Madison Highland Prep was working as a unit and finished the game with 25 assists. They racked up eight more assists than Camp Verde's also-impressive total of 17.

Jordan McMahon-Fullmer continued his habit of posting crazy stat lines for Camp Verde, shooting 4-for-5 from downtown and dropping a double-double with 49 points and 13 boards. McMahon-Fullmer is becoming a predictor of Camp Verde's success: when he posts at least ten rebounds the team is 9-4 (and 6-7 when he doesn't). Alex Ruiz was another key player, going 8 of 11 on his way to 17 points.

Madison Highland Prep's loss dropped their record down to 12-6. As for Camp Verde, their victory was their eighth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 15-11.

Madison Highland Prep didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next matchup, a 79-48 win against Red Rock on the 5th. As for Camp Verde, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next contest, a 55-51 victory against Rancho Solano Prep on the 3rd.
