Football Recap: Whittier Christian Comes Up Short on the Road Against San Gabriel

Whittier Christian had to hit the road for their first game and it wasn't the result they were hoping for. They fell 32-27 to the San Gabriel Matadors on Thursday. The Heralds were up 27-12 in the third quarter but couldn't hold on to the lead.

Whittier Christian's defeat shouldn't obscure the performances of Josepablo Gutierrez, who picked up 100 receiving yards and a pair of TDs, and Tuff Kovacs, who threw for 135 yards and two touchdowns. Gutierrez's longest reception was for an incredible 70 yards. Luke Kerkhoff got in on the action too, converting a pick into a touchdown.

San Gabriel's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Noah Osorio led the charge by picking up 67 receiving yards and a pair of scores.

Whittier Christian has already played their next game, a 28-27 loss against The Webb Schools on the 30th. As for San Gabriel, they also didn't take long to hit the field again: they've already played their next match, a 35-0 victory against Rosemead on the 29th.
