Baseball Recap: Lafayette Victorious

Lafayette proved they can win big last Monday (they won by 11) and on Tuesday they proved they can win the close ones too. They came out on top in a nail-biter against the Branford Buccaneers, sneaking past 2-0. The victory continues a trend for the Hornets in their matchups with the Buccaneers: they've now won nine in a row.

Not much got past Hyatt Richardson, who gave up just a hit and racked up 11 Ks to keep Branford off the board. That's the most strikeouts Richardson has posted since back in February.

On the hitting side, Trevor Mares was excellent, going 1-for-2 with one home run. He also brought in an RBI, marking his first of the season. Another player making a difference was Jordan Murphy, who scored a run and stole a base while going 2-for-2.

Lafayette's win was their third straight at home, which pushed their record up to 13-2. Those victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.3 runs on average over those games. As for Branford, the defeat snapped their winning streak at three games and leaves them with a 11-6 record.

Coming up, Lafayette is taking a road trip to square off against Fort White at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. Lafayette's pitchers better be ready for this one: Fort White has averaged an impressive 7 runs per game this season. As for Branford, they will look to defend their home field on Thursday against Jefferson County at 7:00 p.m.
