Baseball Game Preview: Sahuarita Mustangs vs. Walden Grove Red Wolves

The Sahuarita Mustangs will challenge the Walden Grove Red Wolves at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. Neither Sahuarita nor Walden Grove posted many runs in their last games, so it might be the pitching crews that decide this one.

Friday just wasn't the day for Sahuarita's offense. They came up short against Salpointe Catholic on Friday, falling 12-0. For those keeping track at home, that's the biggest loss the Mustangs have suffered since April 20, 2024.

Meanwhile, Walden Grove narrowly escaped with a win as the squad sidled past Pusch Ridge Christian Academy 2-1.

Walden Grove got a great performance from Gauge Abalos as he struck out nine batters over 5.1 innings while giving up just one earned run off four hits (and only one walk). Those nine strikeouts gave Abalos a new career-high.

At the plate, Walden Grove's victory was truly a team effort as three different players contributed at least one hit. One of them was Vaughn Sexton, who went 1-for-3 with one home run.

Sahuarita's defeat ended a six-game streak of away wins and brought them to 13-5-1. As for Walden Grove, their win bumped their record up to 10-8.

Sahuarita might still be hurting after the 11-1 loss they got from Walden Grove when the teams last played back in April of 2024. Can the Mustangs avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
