Basketball Recap: Fowler Comes Up Short

If Fowler was feeling good fresh off their 56-21 takedown of Walsenburg last Friday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Fowler Grizzlies fell 55-47 to the McClave Cardinals on Saturday. That makes it the first time this season the Grizzlies have let down their home crowd.

When it comes to explaining why Fowler lost, don't look at Isaiah Montoya. Despite the final result, he posted 18 points and five steals. Those five steals gave Montoya a new career-high. Brock True also deserves some recognition as he posted his first block of the season.

McClave's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Tuff Kelley led the charge by almost dropping a triple-double with 12 points, 20 boards, and nine blocks. Kelley is on a roll when it comes to rebounds, as he's now pulled down nine or more in the last 12 games he's played. Another player making a difference was Jr. Mungaray, who went 5 for 9 on his way to 14 points and eight boards.

Fowler's loss dropped their record down to 10-5. As for McClave, the win was the fourth in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 14-2.

Fowler and McClave should be looking forward to their upcoming games as both have a sizable advantage in the MaxPreps Colorado Rankings. Fowler will face off against Rocky Ford at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday up 171 places (149 vs. 320). Fowler will be looking to keep their five-game home win streak dating back to last season alive. Meanwhile, McClave (ranked 57th) will meet Swink (ranked 288th) at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
