Softball Recap: Wake Forest's Undefeated Season over After 13 Games

If Wake Forest was feeling good fresh off their 20-10 takedown of Knightdale last Thursday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Cougars fell just short of the Wakefield Wolverines by a score of 6-5 on Monday. The loss was the Cougars' first of the season.

Jil Livengood spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered just two earned (and four unearned) runs on nine hits and racked up 11 Ks. She has been consistent for a while: she hasn't tossed less than nine strikeouts in 12 consecutive appearances.

At the plate, Wake Forest saw five different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Abbey Lauer, who scored a run while going 1-for-3.

Having lost for the first time this season, Wake Forest fell to 12-1. As for Wakefield, they are on a roll lately: they've won 11 of their last 12 matches. That's provided a nice bump to their 14-2 record this season.

Wake Forest and Wakefield should be looking forward to their upcoming games as both have a sizable advantage in the MaxPreps North Carolina Rankings. The Cougars (ranked 21st) will meet Heritage (ranked 93rd) at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday. Meanwhile, Wakefield will face off against Orange at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday with a big rank advantage (39 vs. 148).
