Baseball Game Preview: Port Jefferson Royals vs. Southampton Mariners

The Port Jefferson Royals will square off against the Southampton Mariners at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (Port Jefferson has three straight wins, Southampton has five straight losses), but none of that matters once you're on the field.

Port Jefferson barely beat John Glenn the last time the pair played, but that sure wasn't the case this time around. The Royals blew past the Knights 8-1 on Thursday. That looming 8-1 mark stands out as the most commanding margin for the Royals yet this season.

Meanwhile, Southampton fell victim to Pierson and their airtight pitching crew on Wednesday. They lost 6-0 to the Whalers. The game marked the first time this season in which the Mariners were not able to get on the board.

Southampton saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Cooper Costa-Helmsteadt, who went 1-for-2 with one triple. That triple was Costa-Helmsteadt's first of the season.

Southampton's defeat dropped their record down to 3-7. As for Port Jefferson, the victory got them back to even at 3-3.
