High school football preview: No. 2 North Shore 2020 schedule, players to watch

Dematrius Davis returns under center for back-to-back 6A Division 1 state champs.

North Shore (Houston) was supposed to open its high school football season against national power De La Salle (Concord) on Aug. 29 in a huge Texas vs. California showdown before COVID-19 canceled those plans. Then the back-to-back 6A Division 1 state champs had to shuffle its schedule after the UIL pushed back the start date for its two largest classifications.

It may not be an out-of-state battle, but the Mustangs now open up against No. 16 Shadow Creek (Pearland, Texas) on Sept. 25 in one of the biggest games on the 2020 schedule. The Sharks won the 5A Division I title last season and move up to 6A this year.

The Mustangs begin the year ranked at No. 2 in the updated MaxPreps Top 50 that features only teams playing in the fall. We will have a separate rankings for states that moved its season to 2021.

2021 Auburn commit Dematrius Davis Jr. is back under center. Over the last two seasons he's accounted for nearly 8,000 yards of total offense and 103 touchdowns while leading the Mustangs to back-to-back state titles in Texas' largest classification.

The last quarterback to do that was the Arizona Cardinals' Kyler Murray when he led Allen to three straight from 2012-14.

Davis has a strong receiving corps during his senior season with 2021 Texas A&M commit Shadrach Banks and Charles King returning. Banks missed the majority of his junior year but showed off his skills during his sophomore campaign hauling in 60 receptions for 1,300 yards and 17 touchdowns. Also expect Jhalyn Bailey to make an impact during his junior year.

2021 Auburn commit Jaeden Roberts returns and will be the leader on a very talented offensive line.

The defense lost key players to graduation but four-star cornerback Denver Harris should help offset those losses. He checks in as the No. 22 player overall among juniors and is the fourth-rated cornerback.

They added a big-time transfer from Virginia in former Oscar Smith (Chesapeake) standout Sherrod Covil Jr. The three-star safety lines up everywhere on defense and will make a huge impact for North Shore during his junior year.
