Football Recap: Marion Wildcats vs. Mattoon Greenwave
Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Marion). They were the clear victor by a 55-34 margin over the Mattoon Greenwave on Friday. Considering the Wildcats have won four games by more than 20 points this season, Friday's blowout was nothing new.
Callahan Roper was his usual excellent self, throwing for 361 yards and seven touchdowns while completing 76.9% of his passes. Samuel Adkins was Roper's top target, picking up 123 receiving yards and two touchdowns.
Marion didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off two passes before the game was over. The picks came courtesy of Max Wade and Junious Thomas.
Despite the loss, Mattoon still got an impressive performance from Trysten Sewell, who rushed for 265 yards and five touchdowns while picking up 9.8 yards per carry. Mattoon also got help from Connor Reincke, who showed off his sure hands for 86 receiving yards.
The win made it two in a row for Marion and bumps their season record up to 6-3. As for Mattoon, they dropped their record down to 2-7 with the defeat, which was their ninth straight on the road dating back to last season.
Marion will face off against Highland at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Highland will roll in looking for their fifth straight victory, something Marion surely won't give up without a fight. Mattoon does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
