Basketball Recap: Rio Grande Takes a Loss

Rio Grande was not able to break out of their rough patch on Wednesday as the team picked up their 14th straight defeat. They were four points away from ending the streak, but they lost a 54-50 heartbreaker at the hands of the Manzano Monarchs. The Ravens were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Monarchs apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in February of 2024.

When it comes to explaining why Rio Grande lost, don't look at Sophia L?pez. Despite the final result, she posted 17 points and six rebounds. That was a full 34% of Rio Grande's points, marking the eighth time in a row she's put up more than a third of the team's points. Another player making a difference was Brianna Knight, who earned ten points and three steals.

Even though they lost, Rio Grande smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 14 offensive boards. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their offensive rebound total in four consecutive matchups.

It was another big night for Daira Solis, who went 6 of 12 on her way to 19 points for Manzano. The dominant performance gave Solis a new career-high in points. The team also got some help courtesy of Zaria Gomez, who had 13 points and three steals.

Rio Grande's defeat dropped their record down to 1-14. As for Manzano, they now have a winning record of 7-6.

Rio Grande has already played their next game, a 52-46 loss against Melrose on the 18th. As for Manzano, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next contest, a 65-44 defeat against West Mesa on the 16th.
