The Oceanside Pirates, ranked No. 1 in the San Diego Union-Tribune poll, defeated the No. 8 La Costa Canyon Mavericks, 37-20, in a non-league game at Oceanside on Friday, Sept. 8.

ÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿ

After La Costa Canyon took an early 7-0 lead, Oceanside answered back when senior quarterback Steven Carroll found senior wide receiver Javier Nicholas from 20 yards out toward the end of the first quarter.ÿ

ÿÿÿÿÿÿÿ

Carroll then connected with senior wide receiver Riley Mende a little over a minute into the second quarter from seven yards out to put the Pirates up 12-7.

ÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿ

"The first half was a result of our own mistakes and their own opportunistic plays," Oceanside coach John Carroll said.

ÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿ

Carroll was referring to a blocked punt by the Mavericks returned for a touchdown by Nathan Kane, and a thrilling, 95-yard kickoff return by Paul Stanley, who also ran back an interception 63 yards for a score.

ÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿ

But despite allowing La Costa Canyon to take a 20-12 lead at halftime, the Pirates rebounded and looked like their usual, dominant selves the final two quarters.
