Softball Recap: Troy Takes Down Huntington in a Playoff Battle

It's playoff time, and Troy had no trouble coming through when it counted. They were the clear victors by a 15-1 margin over the Huntington Red Devils on Saturday. Considering the Trojans have won 23 games by more than five runs this season, Saturday's blowout was nothing new.

Isabella Garcia was a major factor while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out six batters over two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits (and only one walk). She has been consistent recently: she hasn't given up more than one earned run in three consecutive appearances. She was even better at the plate, going 3-for-4 with seven RBI, two doubles, and one run. Those two doubles gave her a new career-high.

In other pitching news, Madelyn Welch looked comfortable as she pitched three innings while giving up just one earned run off three hits. She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up a single walk in eight consecutive appearances.

Back at the plate, Jae Jae Phillips was incredible, getting on base in all four of her plate appearances with one home run, three runs, and four RBI. Laney Setzer was another key player, getting on base in all three of her plate appearances with two runs and one RBI.

Troy always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .529. That was just more of the same: they've now posted an OBP of .529 or higher in three consecutive matchups.

Troy has been performing incredibly well recently as they've won 14 of their last 15 contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 26-5 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.4 runs on average over those games. As for Huntington, they moved to 27-3 with that defeat, which also ended their 16-game winning streak.

The teams didn't have to wait long for a rematch: Troy beat the Red Devils by a score of 13-2 later that day.
