League recap: Mesquite extends winning streak with victory over Marcos de Niza

Mesquite extended the longest winning streak in II Section VI this week by beating Marcos de Niza, 47-28. The victory was the seventh in a row for the team.

Poston Butte lost to Campo Verde 42-7 last week, the largest margin of any game. Russell Corriveau threw for 243 yards and 1 touchdown in the defeat.

Antonio Garcia was a key player and the best on defense this week as Poston Butte fell to the Coyotes. The 6-foot-0 senior racked up 2 sacks.

Joshua Eckley was a passing and rushing force as the Padres fell to Mesquite. He completed 23 passes for 335 yards and 2 touchdowns and also ran for 56 yards. Eckley's key target this week was Nick Sweet, who caught 6 passes for 88 yards.

Paul Perry was a force in the backfield as Jim Jones' team defeated Marcos de Niza.

Luke Pineda threw for 288 yards and 4 touchdowns. He was 23-32 with 0 interceptions.

Pineda put up the best numbers through the air as Campo Verde beat Michael De La Torre's team. Pineda's favorite target this week was Jordan Fickas, who caught 9 passes for 93 yards.

6-foot-2 quarterback Eckley of Roy Lopez's team is the league leader in passing yards this season with 1,819. He has also thrown 25 touchdowns. The leading receiver in the league this season is Nolan Tondreau. The Mesquite star has 43 catches for 734 yards.

The most important game in the league this week will be the match up between Max Ragsdale's team and the Wildcats. The Coyotes enters the game ranked 20th in the state, while Mesquite ranks 13th.

Going into this week's contest against Saguaro, the Padres' Eckley needs 181 passing yards to surpass 2,000 on the season.

The top two defenses in the league will face off this season when Campo Verde takes on the Wildcats. The Coyotes have allowed 95 points this season, while Mesquite has given up 137. Campo Verde allowed 7 points last week as it defeated the Broncos.

Westwood made the biggest leap in the national rankings this week, rising to 3,745 from 4,545. The improvement was largely due to a 26-0 victory over Fairfax last week.
