Baseball Recap: Hillsboro Triumphs

While Hillsboro put up some runs on Monday, the same can't be said for Webster Groves. The Hawks sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 2-0 win over the Statesmen. This was payback for the Hawks, who suffered a 7-2 defeat the last time these two teams met.

Not much got past Easton Day, who gave up just five hits to keep Webster Groves off the board. Day has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two walks in nine consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, Max Partney was excellent, going 1-for-2 with one home run. He is becoming a predictor of Hillsboro's success: when he posts at least one home run the team is undefeated (and 9-10 when he doesn't).

Hillsboro is on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 12-10 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.8 runs on average over those games. As for Webster Groves, they dropped their record down to 8-19 with the loss, which was their fifth straight at home.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Hillsboro will head out to square off against Windsor at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. The Hawks are facing the Owls at the right time seeing as the Owls are stuck on a three-game losing streak. As for Webster Groves, they will head out on the road to face off against Festus at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
