The Burges Mustangs will head out to face off against the Canutillo Eagles at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.
Burges had to skate by with only a two-run margin when they last took the field, which might have inspired the ten-run drubbing they dealt Jefferson on Wednesday. Burges put the hurt on Jefferson with a sharp 14-4 victory. With that win, the Mustangs brought their scoring average up to 6.3 runs per game.
The team relied heavily on Angelina Alvarez, who went 2-for-3 with two stolen bases, three RBI, and two runs. That's the most stolen bases she has posted since back in April of 2024. Another player making a difference was Breann Mendoza, who went 2-for-4 with one home run and three RBI.
Fans were treated to a battle of the Eagles on Wednesday. Canutillo never let Andress get on the board and left with a 16-0 victory. Canutillo hasn't had any issues with Andress recently, as the game was their seventh consecutive win against them.
Alina Banda made a splash while hitting and pitching. She struck out six batters over three innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit (and not a single walk). Banda was also stellar in the batter's box, scoring two runs and stealing a base while going 2-for-4.
In other batting news, Abigail Lujan was incredible, going a perfect 3-for-3 with three runs, four RBI, and one triple. Giovanna Navarro was another key player, scoring three runs while going 3-for-3.
Canutillo always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .536. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Andress only posted an OBP of .200.
Burges' record now sits at 11-12. As for Canutillo, their record now sits at 11-8-1.
Friday's match will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Burges hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .386. However, it's not like Canutillo struggles in that department as they've averaged .392. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Burges might still be hurting after the 19-2 defeat they got from Canutillo in their previous meeting back in April of 2024. Can Burges avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
