Recap: Girard College Cavaliers vs. Freire Charter Dragon
The Girard College Cavaliers's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Saturday after their fifth straight loss. They took a 67-58 hit to the loss column at the hands of Freire Charter. Having run the score up that high, both teams probably have some extra defensive drills coming up.
Loss or not, Girard College got some senior leadership from Antoine Seals who scored 21 points and Brasen Avent who scored 19 points. Seals scored a full 36.2% of Girard College's points, the third time in a row he's earned more than a third of the team's points. Jawan McSwiggan was another key contributor, scoring seven points.
Freire Charter's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Ibrahim Mahmoud, who scored 19 points. The contest was Mahmoud's tenth in a row with at least ten points. Another player making a difference was Dennis Brunson, who scored 14 points along with nine rebounds and three blocks.
Girard College's loss was their fifth straight at home, which bumped their record down to 3-7. As for Freire Charter, the victory got them back to even at 5-5.
Girard College won't have much time to rest: their next matchup is against Mesivta at 2:30 p.m. on January 7th. Hopefully Mesivta focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up eight on Tuesday. Freire Charter will be staying on the road on Monday to face off against Thomas A. Edison at 3:15 p.m. on January 8th. That game will pit two of the most dominant against one another: Quinzel Merritt and Mahmoud.
