Basketball Recap: Maple Mountain Falls Despite Big Games from Leah Bailey and Shay Brown

After flying high against West Field last Tuesday, Maple Mountain came back down to earth. The Golden Eagles took a 69-61 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Alta Hawks on Tuesday. If the Golden Eagles were looking for revenge after losing 42-39 to the Hawks when the teams met back in February of 2020, then they'll just have to keep looking.

Maple Mountain's defeat shouldn't obscure the performances of Shay Brown, who went 7-for-14 en route to 22 points, and Leah Bailey, who shot 55% from the field to rack up 17 points and three steals. Thanks to that strong game, Brown now owns an excellent 46.2% shooting accuracy. Jemima Griffin also deserves some recognition as she grabbed her first steal of the season.

Alta's win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Alia Baldassano, who posted 21 points along with six assists and three steals. That's the most assists Baldassano has posted since back in January. Another player making a difference was Olivia Stephens, who went 7-for-15 on her way to 21 points and eight rebounds.

Maple Mountain's loss was their fourth straight on the road dating back to last season, which dropped their record down to 3-1. Those road defeats can't be blamed on the team's offensive performance across that stretch, as they've averaged 54.0 points this season. As for Alta, they now have a winning record of 2-1.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming contests. Maple Mountain will square off against Lone Peak at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. As for Alta, they will challenge Green Canyon at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday.
