The PikeView Panthers will square off against the James Monroe Mavericks at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday. PikeView is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8.1 runs per game this season.
PikeView was handed a ten-run loss in their previous outing, but that didn't affect their clutch gene on Friday. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 5-3 win over South Charleston.
Eli Hilling made a big impact while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out eight batters over six innings while giving up just two earned runs off two hits. Hilling was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-2 with two RBI and one double.
In other batting news, Trenton Tolliver was excellent, going 2-for-3 with three runs and two doubles. That's the most doubles he has posted since back in March.
Meanwhile, James Monroe came tearing into Thursday's game with three straight wins , and they left with even more momentum. Their pitchers stepped up to hand the Falcons a 13-0 shutout. The result was nothing new for the Mavericks, who have now won eight contests by six runs or more so far this season.
Like PikeView, James Monroe also got a great game from a two-way player: Bodie Zickefoose. On the mound, he didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only one hit while striking out seven over four innings pitched. Zickefoose has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up more than two walks in four consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with two stolen bases, two runs, and one RBI. James Monroe is undefeated when Zickefoose posts two or more stolen bases, but 9-12 otherwise.
In other batting news, James Monroe got a massive performance out of Kadyn Hines, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with one home run, three runs, and one stolen base. Hines is becoming a predictor of the Mavericks' success: when he posts at least one home run the team is 4-1 (and 8-11 when he doesn't). The team also got some help courtesy of Brycen Parker, who got on base in all four of his plate appearances with two runs and two RBI.
James Monroe always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .588. They are a perfect 4-0 when they post an OBP of .513 or better.
PikeView's victory bumped their record up to 19-8. As for James Monroe, the win got them back to even at 12-12.
James Monroe's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: PikeView hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .322.
