Team preview

Jenks returned to the top of the Oklahoma high school football scene with its first state title since 2007. Head coach Allen Trimble’s squad returns 14 starters and is a heavy favorite to repeat as state champion. Defensive back Steven Parker is the team’s blue-chip recruit, but there’s plenty of talent on both sides of the ball. Brett Tye, who returned a kickoff 96 yards for a touchdown in Jenks’ 55-20 victory over Broken Arrow, is back and will see work at running back. If Jenks beats Euless Trintiy in its opener, it will be a milestone victory for the state of Oklahoma.

2. Union (Tulsa)
Head coach: Kirk Fridrich
2012 finish: 10-3
Team preview

Eight-time state champion Union had its streak of four straight state titles snapped last year by rival Jenks. It will bounce back with two Oklahoma commits, receiver Jeffery Mead and tight end Carson Meier, back on offense. Justin Silmon, the team’s leading rusher a year ago, is also back. The defense will be less experienced, but does return defensive lineman JoJo Ogundare, who made 73 tackles and seven sacks a year ago. Union will be an underdog in its opener against DeSoto (Texas).

3. Broken Arrow
Head coach: Ron Lancaster
2012 finish: 8-4
Team preview

Broken Arrow boasts one of the most explosive players in the state in Devon Thomas, who was Oklahoma State’s first recruit in the class of 2014. The guy who will be handing the ball off to him, Coleman Key, isn’t bad either. The 6-foot-5 signal-caller is committed to Colorado State. Linebacker Gyasi Akam, another Oklahoma State commit, leads a defense that returns five starters.

4. Norman North
Head coach: Wade Standley
2012 finish: 12-2
Team preview

Norman North’s offense could be even more potent than it was in 2012, a year in which it posted nearly 550 points in 14 games. David Cornwell, Alabama’s lone quarterback commit in the class of 2014, will guide the team’s offense. He transferred to Norman North in the offseason. Six-foot-four tight end Payton Prince should be even better than last season when he caught 10 touchdown passes. The defense will be inexperienced; it loses its top six tacklers to graduation.

5. Edmond Santa Fe
Head coach: Lance Manning
2012 finish: 10-2
Team preview

The state of Oklahoma has several good quarterbacks in the class of 2014 and Edmond Santa Fe has one of them in Oklahoma commit Justice Hansen. Senior Cameron Westbrook, another key offensive player, returns on offense. He’ll be joined in the backfield my Michael Farmer, a transfer from Edmond Memorial. Linebacker Austin Mack, one of the team’s leaders on defense, is back for his senior season.
