Football Game Preview: Lopez Lobos vs. Edcouch-Elsa Yellowjackets

The Lopez Lobos will head out to challenge the Edcouch-Elsa Yellowjackets at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. The squads are rolling into the game with opposing streaks: Lopez has struggled recently with three losses in a row, while Edcouch-Elsa will arrive with three straight victories.

On Thursday, Lopez was within striking distance but couldn't close the gap as they fell 33-28 to Pace.

Despite the defeat, Lopez saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Ricardo Saucedo rushed for 125 yards and one touchdown. Saucedo is crushing it when it comes to rushing yards: he's rushed for at least 100 every time he's taken the field this season. Bogney Thaddeus also helped out with an impressive 92 receiving yards.

Meanwhile, Edcouch-Elsa was able to grind out a solid win over Pharr-San Juan-Alamo Southwest on Friday, taking the game 27-17.

Edcouch-Elsa's defense made their presence known, laying out the QB six times. Leading the way was Derek Cardenas with 4.5 sacks. He also set a new season-high mark in total tackles with 13. Brandon Ibarra got in on the action too, converting a pick into a touchdown.

Edcouch-Elsa now has a winning record of 5-4. As for Lopez, they now have a losing record of 4-5.

Lopez came up short against Edcouch-Elsa in their previous matchup back in November of 2024, falling 24-17. Thankfully for the Lobos, Elijah Trevino (who rushed for 159 yards while picking up 7.6 yards per carry, and also threw for 168 yards and a pair of TDs while completing 85.7% of his passes) won't be suiting up this time.
