California high school football: CIF Regional Bowl news, notes and predictions

By Mitch Stephens Dec 2, 2021, 1:22pm

Out of 26 games and 52 teams, there's only four unbeatens, and almost as many with at least four losses as squads with double-digit wins.

The California Interscholastic Bowl Championships are not a traditional way to decide football champions and frankly, are utterly unique. It doesn't closely resemble a set of brackets, like most states feature, that eliminate teams week-to-week over a month-to-six-week span until ultimate champions are crowned.

This is a two-week setup where 56 section champions are aligned by 10 section commissioners first by region — North and South — and then by a competitive equity formula that's not entirely objective.

The result is 26 regional championship bowl games (Divisions 1AA-1A to 7AA) that will be played this week with the winners to play 13 regional state bowl championships next week.

Add in an Open Division featuring the two handpicked top teams in each region — this season Serra (San Mateo) in the North against Mater Dei (Santa Ana) in the South — plus a 7AA contest between Taft (Woodland Hills) at Balboa (San Francisco), and California's model is complete.

It's morphed a few times since 2006, when there were just six handpicked teams to play in three bowl games — Divisions I, II and III. Like the College Football Playoff, there is loads of debate and discussion, but ultimately, the games have been highly competitive and even entertaining.

The Open Division, 1AA, 1A, 2AA and 2A state bowl title games will be played Dec. 10-11 at Saddleback College in Mission Viejo, while the remaining divisions will be played at host sites throughout the Northern half of the state.

Heading into the 2021 lineup, there are some oddities and tidbits. Among them:

* Of the 56 champions, only four are undefeated — Mater Dei (11-0), Mater Dei Catholic (Chula Vista) (11-0) in 2-AA, University Prep (Redding) (13-0) in 5-A and Fall River (McArthur) (11-0) in 7-AA.

* There almost as many teams with at least four losses (24) as teams with double-digit wins (26).

* Five teams are .500 or below with three below the even threshold.

* Six teams have given up more points than they've scored.

* The games figure to be tight. According to calprep projections, only 8 of the 26 are predicted to be decided by double-digit margins with the top two biggest blowouts predicted at Division 7 AA, 16 and 17 points. Nine are projected to be decided by a field goal or less.
Folsom quarterback Tyler Tremain (7) is healthy again and will try to reverse a 31-10 loss to De La Salle and Chase Tofaeno (60) Friday night in the 1-AA Northern California title game.
