Football Recap: South Putnam Starts Season with Win on the Road

South Putnam had to travel to play their first game of the season, but the final result was worth the trip. They blew past the North Putnam Cougars 53-33 on Friday. The contest was pretty much decided by the half, when the score had already reached 39-19.

Ty Benton had an outrageously good game as he rushed for 300 yards and five touchdowns while picking up 12.5 yards per carry. He showed off some serious burst, turning on the afterburners on one carry for 65 yards. Drew Cline was another key player, throwing for 197 yards and three TDs on only nine passes.

They were just one part of a punishing run game: South Putnam was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 426 rushing yards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now rushed for at least 213 rushing yards in five consecutive matchups dating back to last season.

When it comes to explaining why North Putnam lost, don't look at Christian Kramer. Despite the final result, he threw for 255 yards and a pair of touchdowns, and also punched in a pair of scores on the ground. Kramer has been hot, having also posted two or more rushing touchdowns the last seven times he's played.

South Putnam has already played their next game, a 65-21 victory against Greencastle on the 29th. As for North Putnam, they also wasted no time getting back out on the field and have already played their next contest, a 57-26 win against Cloverdale on the 29th.
