Softball Preview: Beech Grove Hornets vs. Southport Cardinals
Beech Grove and Southport are an even 3-3 against one another since May of 2017, but likely not for long. The Beech Grove Hornets will head out on the road to challenge the Southport Cardinals at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Beech Grove is currently enjoying a perfect season and no doubt wants to keep things rolling.
Beech Grove put the finishing touches on their third blowout victory of the season on Monday. Everything went their way against Pike as Beech Grove made off with a 14-1 victory. Beech Grove's hitters stepped up their game for this one, as that was the most runs they've scored all season.
Malone Moore was a major factor while hitting and pitching. She struck out six batters over two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits (and only one walk). Moore has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts every time she's pitched this season. Moore was also big at the plate, going 2-for-2 with three RBI and two doubles.
In other batting news, Beech Grove let Kylee Robinson and Aubree Bailey loose on the outfield. Robinson scored two runs and stole a base while going 1-for-2, while Bailey scored two runs while getting on base in all three of her plate appearances. Another player making a difference was Jalyn Jordan, who scored a run while going 1-for-2.
Meanwhile, Southport suffered a tough 18-4 defeat at the hands of Whiteland two weeks ago.
Beech Grove's win bumped their record up to 4-0. As for Southport, their loss dropped their record down to 1-1.
Beech Grove was able to grind out a solid victory over Southport in their previous meeting back in April of 2023, winning 6-1. The rematch might be a little tougher for Beech Grove since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
