Softball Game Preview: Desert Edge Scorpions vs. Buckeye Hawks

For the second straight game, Desert Edge will face off against Buckeye. Desert Edge will welcome Buckeye at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. Desert Edge has given up an average of 9.3 runs per game this season, but Thursday's game will give them a chance to turn things around.

Desert Edge came up short against Buckeye on Tuesday, falling 12-2. The Scorpions have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.

For Buckeye's part, Caleila Kaluna was a major factor no matter where she played. On the mound, she tossed six innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off two hits. What's more, Kaluna posted five strikeouts, the most she's had since back in April of 2024. She was also stellar in the batter's box, going 1-for-3 with four RBI, one triple, and one run. That triple marked the first that she hit this season.

In other batting news, Buckeye got a massive performance out of Kaleikaumaka Ellis, who scored three runs and stole a base while going 2-for-4. Ellis also hit two triples, marking her first of the season. Mya Loya was another key player, scoring two runs and stealing four bases while going 2-for-2.

Buckeye was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .393. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Desert Edge only posted a batting average of .250.

The victory was the fourth in a row for Buckeye, bringing their record up to 7-3. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 16.0 runs over those games. As for Desert Edge, their defeat dropped their record down to 5-7.

Thursday's match might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Desert Edge has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .511. However, it's not like Buckeye struggles in that department as they've averaged .474. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
