Basketball Game Preview: Gretna Hawks vs. Nelson County Governors

The Gretna Hawks will face off against the Nelson County Governors at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Keep an eye on the score for this one: both posted some lofty point totals in their previous games.

Last Tuesday, Gretna earned a 65-58 win over Altavista. Given the Hawks' advantage in MaxPreps' Virginia basketball rankings (they are ranked 55th, while the Colonels are ranked 218th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Meanwhile, Nelson County waltzed into their contest on Tuesday with two straight wins... but they left with three. They secured a 63-59 W over the Wildcats.

Gretna better focus on containing Colton Ward and Bryce Giles as the pair were huge in Nelson County's win. Ward dropped a double-double on 23 points and 15 boards, while Giles dropped a double-double on 17 points and 11 rebounds. Giles' evening made it three games in a row in which he has scored at least ten points. The team also got some help courtesy of Jack Winter, who posted six points in addition to seven boards and five assists.

Gretna's victory was their ninth straight on the road dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 9-1. As for Nelson County, their win bumped their record up to 8-3.

Gretna skirted past Nelson County 72-69 when the teams last played back in February of 2024. Does Gretna have another victory up their sleeve, or will Nelson County turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
