Basketball Recap: Benjamin Takes a Loss

Benjamin and St. John Paul II Academy squared off in some playoff action on Friday, but Benjamin had to settle for second. They fell 62-52 to the St. John Paul II Academy Eagles. The Buccaneers were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Eagles apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in January of 2020.

Despite the defeat, Benjamin saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Griffon Alterman posted 15 points. Those 15 points gave Alterman a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Tristan Cameron, who earned nine points.

St. John Paul II Academy's win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Nick Durham, who went 8-for-12 on his way to 18 points along with seven rebounds and five steals. The team also got some help courtesy of Sam Kaufman, who dropped a double-double with ten points and 11 boards.

Benjamin's loss dropped their record down to 9-13. As for St. John Paul II Academy, the victory was the sixth in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 17-9.

Benjamin has already played their next match, a 57-51 win against Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy on the 12th. As for St. John Paul II Academy, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 56-50 defeat against John Carroll Catholic on the 12th.
