Softball Recap: Grants Drops Highest Score of Season Against Newcomb

Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Grants). They never let the Newcomb Skyhawks get on the board and left with an 18-0 win on Monday. The victory continues a trend for the Pirates in their matchups with the Skyhawks: they've now won five in a row.

Alynn Othole looked comfortable as she tossed three innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. She has been consistent recently: she hasn't given up more than one hit in three consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, Olivia Toivanen and Delilah Martinez did most of the damage at the plate: Toivanen fired off two home runs, three runs, and three RBI while going 3-for-3, while Martinez went 2-for-3 with one home run, two stolen bases, and three runs. Those two home runs gave Toivanen a new career-high. Melia Chavez also deserves some recognition as she hit her first triple of the season.

Grants kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 13 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least eight hits in nine consecutive games.

Grants' win was their fourth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 11-8. Those home victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.3 runs on average over those games. As for Newcomb, they have been struggling recently as they've lost ten of their last 11 matches. That's put a noticeable dent in their 3-13 record this season.

Grants will have a chance to go back-to-back against Newcomb: the pair will be back at it again later today.
