1. More Glitter at Celebrity High
As if Oaks Christian’s football team, located at Westlake Village (Calif.), about 30 minutes from Hollywood, needed any more attention. Now football icon Joe Montana is going to coach from the press box in 2009, coach Bill Redell told football.com's Paul Gable in this story for MaxPreps. Montana’s son Nick Montana was the starting quarterback last season as a junior at Oaks Christian, which has the sons of two other iconic figures on the team, Trevor Gretzky (father Wayne) and Trey Smith (father Will). Redell says the program is making an exception to its rule of parents not coaching their sons. “The new rule is, if you’ve been a three-time Super Bowl MVP, then you can come out and coach your kid,” Redell told Gable.

Renardo Sidney might not get to Mississippi State.

2. Scrutinizing Sidney and Wall
CBSSports.com national columnist Gregg Doyel does a terrific job saying what many think when reading headlines about two of the nation’s top and most recently troubled basketball recruits of 2009, Renardo Sidney and John Wall.
3. Seeing Triple
The Warly triplets Brittany, Alexa and Caroline led powerhouse Cherry Creek to a Colorado 5A state tennis championship last week. Brittany was the team’s No. 2 singles player while Alexa and Carolina teamed at No. 3 doubles. See this fun feature by Brian Forbes for the Denver Post. Cherry Creek won its 13th-straight state crown with 71 points to defeat Ponderosa (49) and Chatfield (37).
4. Spinning Records in Colorado
Another fantastic feature by the Denver Post on national record-setting discus thrower Mason Finley out of Buena Vista in Colorado. On April 25, Finley surpassed the national mark of 234 feet, 3 inches with a toss of 236-6 at Alamosa. He also has of 71-3 ¼ in the shot put. He’s committed to UCLA and the big city of Los Angeles which will be quite a step considering he resides in the small rural central Colorado town of Salida, population 2,195.
5. National Swim Mark
It was a league meet for swimmer’s sake and she wasn’t even tapered. But Las Lomas (Walnut Creek, Calif.) junior Kasey Carlson broke the national 100-yard breaststroke high school record winning in 58.59 seconds Friday at Soda Aquatic Center in Moraga, topping the mark of 59.20 set in 2005 by Long Beach Wilson’s Jessica Hurd. See this fine story by Phil Jensen of the Contra Costa Times, and more weekend highlights from our own Dave Krider that includes a softball team breaking a 100-game losing streak. Good stuff.
