Preview: Middletown Middies vs. Fairfield Indians
Middletown is 2-8 against Fairfield since January of 2016 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Saturday. The Middletown Middies will look to defend their home court against the Fairfield Indians at 1:45 p.m. Both teams come into the contest bolstered by wins in their previous matches.
Middletown has not had quite the year their fans were hoping for to this point, but back-to-back wins may be a sign of good things to come. They took down Edgewood 60-43 on Saturday. Middletown pushed the score to 47-24 by the end of the third, a deficit Edgewood cut but never quite recovered from.
Meanwhile, Fairfield had to endure a five-game losing streak, but that streak is no more. They took their contest at home on Wednesday with ease, bagging a 54-19 win over Colerain. The squad ran away with 47 points in the first half and mostly just sat on those to pick up the win.
Fairfield had a senior duo take command as Myka Richardson scored ten points and Kimberlin Samples scored ten points along with two steals. Samples continues to roll, besting her previous point total in each of the last three games she's played. Another player making a difference was Lexi Hayes, who scored four points along with five assists and three steals.
Middletown has been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four matches, which provided a nice bump to their 7-13 record this season. As for Fairfield, their win bumped their record up to 9-12.
Middletown ended up a good deal behind Fairfield when the teams last played back in January, losing 46-32. A big factor in that loss was the dominant performance of Richardson, who scored 22 points along with eight rebounds and five steals. Now that Middletown knows the damage she can cause, will they be able to stop her this time? There's only one way to find out.
