4A Gila Top Player Performances of the Week

Congratulations to this week's top players! We're covering the best performances from Friday's football action (using all statistics entered as of the time of writing). Enjoy!

Jason Hurtado Delivers Best Effort of Season

On Friday, Douglas got the W thanks in part to Jason Hurtado playing the best football he has all season. Hurtado rushed for 200 yards and two touchdowns while picking up 7.4 yards per carry. The performance once again pushed his average rushing yardage north of 100 yards per game (103.1). Those 200 rushing yards gave him a new career-high.

Rio Rico had to have seen this coming; the last time they saw Hurtado it was a similar story. Back in October of 2023 (the last time Hurtado saw the Hawks), he rushed for 147 yards and a touchdown.

Espinoza Came Up Big in Amphitheater's 42-15 Win

Jacob Espinoza put up the most rushing yards he's had since back in September of 2023 on Friday. He rushed for 101 yards.

For the season, Espinoza has averaged 23.2 receiving yards per game. It gets even more impressive: after six games last season, he was only averaging 42.67 rushing yards per game. This year he is averaging 65.17 rushing yards.

Mananne Abakar Turns in Season-Best Effort

On Friday, Rincon/University had to settle for second even though Mananne Abakar put up the best numbers he has all season. Abakar picked up 85 receiving yards and a touchdown, and also rushed for 61 yards and a touchdown. He showed off some serious burst, cutting through the defense on one rush that went for 61 yards.

Rincon/University's defeat was their third straight at home, which dropped their record down to 2-5. Abakar and Rincon/University will welcome Sahuarita at 7:00 p.m. on Friday.

Ivan Higuera Makes It Two for Douglas

The second Douglas player making an appearance here is Ivan Higuera, and for good reason. He threw for 117 yards and two touchdowns, and also rushed for 34 yards and a touchdown.

Rio Rico's probably not too fond of Higuera given he always seems to get the better of them. When Higuera last faced the Hawks back in October of 2023, he rushed for 221 yards and two touchdowns on only 12 carries.
