Baseball Recap: Cerritos Sets Scoring Season-High Against Whitney

Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Cerritos). They were the clear victors by an 18-1 margin over the Whitney Wildcats on Thursday. The Dons haven't had any issues with the Wildcats recently, as the game was their sixth consecutive victory against them.

Frank Melendrez looked comfortable as he didn't allow a single earned run while striking out eight over four innings pitched. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two walks in three consecutive appearances.

At the plate, Cerritos got a massive performance out of Braxton Reed, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with three runs, two doubles, and two RBI. The Dons are 4-1 when Reed posts two or more runs, but 9-10 otherwise. Julian Diaz was another key player, going 3-for-4 with four RBI, two runs, and one double.

Cerritos kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 17 hits. That's the most hits they've posted since back in April of 2024.

Cerritos pushed their record up to 13-11 with the win, which was their sixth straight on the road. Those road victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.8 runs on average over those games. As for Whitney, they have been struggling recently as they've lost eight of their last nine matchups. That's put a noticeable dent in their 4-10 record this season.

Cerritos wasted no time getting back out on the field and has already played their next contest, a 2-1 win against Ocean View on the 18th. As for Whitney, they also didn't take long to hit the field again: they've already played their next game, an 8-6 loss against Santa Ana Valley on the 23rd.
