Football Game Preview: Canyon Lake Hawks vs. Uvalde Coyotes/Lobos (for girls)

The Canyon Lake Hawks will take on the Uvalde Coyotes/Lobos (for girls) at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Given that the two teams suffered a loss in their last games, they both have a little extra motivation heading into this matchup.

Canyon Lake had been on a three-game streak of scoring at least 31 points, but Somerset put an end to it on Friday. The contest between the Hawks and the Bulldogs didn't end well, with the Hawks falling 23-7. The game marked the Hawks' lowest-scoring matchup so far this season.

Despite the loss, Canyon Lake got top-tier performance from Chris Brown, who rushed for 96 yards and one TD on only 12 carries, and also picked up 39 receiving yards. The bulk of those rushing yards came from one huge play: a run that gained an incredible 54 yards.

Meanwhile, Uvalde was not able to break out of their rough patch last Friday as the team picked up their fourth straight defeat. They came up short against Somerset, falling 43-22. Despite 64 more yards than the Bulldogs, the Coyotes/Lobos (for girls) couldn't convert that extra yardage to scores.

Canyon Lake will need to focus on slowing down Jett Flores, one of several Uvalde players who made an impact when they last played. He threw for 298 yards and three touchdowns, and also rushed for 42 yards. Uvalde's leading receiver Diego Granados was Flores' top target yet again, picking up 139 receiving yards and a pair of scores.

Uvalde's loss dropped their record down to 2-4. As for Canyon Lake, their defeat was their first in the district, dropping their district record down to 2-1 and their overall record down to 5-2.

Canyon Lake took their victory against Uvalde in their previous matchup back in October of 2024 by a conclusive 27-7 score. Will the Hawks repeat their success, or do the Coyotes/Lobos (for girls) have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
