Baseball Recap: Ashwaubenon Comes Up Short

Ashwaubenon fought the good fight in their extra-innings match against Neenah on Saturday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Rockets by a score of 6-5. The result was an unpleasant reminder to the Jaguars of the 5-4 defeat they experienced in the pair's previous head-to-head fixture back in May of 2024.

Nick Smith was a force to be reckoned with on the mound despite the final result: he struck out nine batters over 4.2 innings while giving up just one earned run off four hits.

On the hitting side, Nolan Vertz was cooking despite his team's loss, going 2-for-3 with two RBI, one run, and one double. Zak Bellile also deserves some recognition as he snagged his first stolen bases of the season.

Ashwaubenon has been struggling recently as they've lost three of their last four games. That's put a noticeable dent in their 6-10 record this season. Those losses can't be blamed on the team's pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.0 runs on average over those games. As for Neenah, the victory got them back to even at 7-7-1.

Coincidentally, Ashwaubenon and Neenah will both be playing Slinger the next time they take the field. The Jaguars will head out to face the Owls at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, while the Rockets will play them later in the day, at 3:00 p.m.
