Recap: West Mesa Mustangs vs. Highland Hornets
The West Mesa Mustangs gave their fans exactly what they wanted out of a home opener on Thursday. They came out on top in a nail-biter against Highland and snuck past 48-45. That's another feather in the cap for West Mesa, who also won these teams' last head-to-head.
West Mesa's win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Cece Thrasher, who scored 17 points along with 5 rebounds and 4 steals. Monique Sena was another key contributor, scoring 15 points along with 5 rebounds and 5 steals.
Despite the loss, Highland saw an underclassman step up: Rebecca Neal scored 12 points along with 7 rebounds and 3 steals. The team also got some help courtesy of Breanna Payton, who scored 9 points along with 6 rebounds.
West Mesa's win bumped their record up to 1-0. As for Highland, their defeat dropped their record down to 0-1.
West Mesa will be playing in front of their home fans against Lovington at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday. As for Highland, they will head out on the road to face off against Menaul at 11:45 a.m. on Saturday.
