Basketball Recap: Zach Summeril and Joseph Johnson Secure Win for Woodland Park

Woodland Park played in conference for the first time on Friday and they got just the result they we're looking for. Everything went their way against the Ellicott Thunderhawks as the Woodland Park Panthers made off with a 65-41 win. The Panthers have seen this before: they got the W the last time they saw the Thunderhawks, too.

Leading Woodland Park to victory were Joseph Johnson and Zach Summeril. Johnson dropped a double-double on 21 points and 11 rebounds, while Summeril dropped a double-double on 19 points and ten boards. Johnson is also on a roll when it comes to steals, as he's now grabbed two or more in the last three games he's played. Breckten Wilson was another key player, putting up seven points.

Woodland Park was working as a unit and finished the game with 12 assists. That's the most assists they've posted since the start of last season.

Ellicott's loss came despite strong showings from Jairus Martin and Tavon Flewellen. Martin posted 14 points along with five assists and five steals, while Flewellen scored eight points and three steals. With that strong performance, Martin is now averaging an impressive 2.1 steals per game. Brysen Lagasse also deserves some recognition as he posted his first assist of the season.

Woodland Park moved to 4-8 with that victory, which also ended their three-game losing streak. As for Ellicott, they dropped their record down to 3-8 with the loss, which was their 16th straight at home dating back to last season.

Woodland Park has already played their next contest, a 48-38 win against Florence on the 30th. As for Ellicott, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next match, an 81-40 defeat against Salida on the 28th.
