Softball Game Preview: Springfield Senators vs. Taylorville Tornadoes

The Springfield Senators will square off against the Taylorville Tornadoes at 4:30 p.m. on Monday. The timing is sure in Springfield's favor as the squad sits on three straight wins at home while Taylorville has been banged up by five consecutive losses on the road dating back to last season.

On Saturday, Springfield came up short against Champaign Central and fell 6-3.

Mia Volpert was huge no matter where she played even without the win. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out 12 batters over six innings while giving up just two earned (and four unearned) runs off seven hits (and only one walk). She has been consistent for a while: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts any time she's pitched this season. She was also big at the plate, going 2-for-3 with three runs and one triple.

In other batting news, Bella Pagliara was cooking despite her team's loss, going 2-for-4 with one triple and one RBI. That triple marked the first that she has hit this season.

Meanwhile, Taylorville lost 18-2 to Mahomet-Seymour on Monday.

Taylorville saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Kyleigh Heimsness, who went 1-for-3 with one run.

Springfield's loss dropped their record down to 12-4. As for Taylorville, their defeat dropped their record down to 2-14.

Springfield skirted past Taylorville 5-3 in their previous matchup back in May of 2024. Will the Senators repeat their success, or do the Tornadoes have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
