To say the Southern Section Division I playoff bracket is anything less than tops in the country would just be wrong.

Four of the nation's top 17 teams are a part of the 12-team bracket, which were announced today: Redondo Union (Redondo Beach) at 35 wins, three losses, Mater Dei (Santa Ana) at 27-4, Marymount (Los Angeles) at 31-3 and Sierra Canyon (Chatsworth) at 33-2.

All four teams have first-round byes.

In last week's MaxPreps Xcellent 25 national rankings, Mater Dei was ranked third, Marymount No. 4, Redondo Union No. 10 and Sierra Canyon at 17.

Redondo Union and Mater Dei played just once this season, a five-set thriller won by the Sea Hawks, fighting back from two games down to prevail 24-26, 22-25, 29-27, 25-20 and 15-8. Marymount also has a pair of three-game win over the Monarchs.

The rest of the bracket is loaded and features teams from the MaxPreps Top 25 California computer rankings, including Aliso Niguel (No. 8), Mira Costa (Manhattan Beach) (No. 10), Vista Murrieta (Murrieta) (No. 12), Corona del Mar (Newport Beach) (No. 14) and Laguna Beach (No. 17).

BEST OF REST: D3 / D4 / D5 / D6 / D7 / D8 / D9

The Southern Section also released eight other of its divisional brackets, including top Division 2 seed Village Christian (Sun Valley), ranked 16th in the state.

In all, there are a remarkable 240 teams participating in the nine brackets, including 36 who are fighting it out in play-in or "wild card" matches. Nine of those matches take place in Division 8.
