Baseball Game Preview: Steamboat Springs Sailors vs. Meeker Cowboys

Steamboat Springs is 0-4 against Meeker since April of 2023 but things could change on Wednesday. The Sailors will face off against the Cowboys at 3:00 p.m. Steamboat Springs is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 9.1 runs per game this season.

Steamboat Springs took a loss when they played away from home two weeks ago, but their home fans gave them all the motivation they needed two weeks ago. They came out on top against Eagle Valley by a score of 10-6. The win was some much needed relief for the Sailors as it spelled an end to their five-game losing streak.

Fred Lohne made a splash no matter where he played. On the mound, he struck out 11 batters over 5.2 innings while giving up three earned (and three unearned) runs off six hits. Those 11 strikeouts gave him a new career-high. He was also solid in the batter's box, going a perfect 3-for-3 with three RBI.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Tanner Cobb, who went 3-for-4 with one run, one double, and one RBI. Another player making a difference was Jude Fesperman, who went 2-for-3 with one stolen base and one run.

Steamboat Springs was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .379. They are 8-1 when they post a batting average of .375 or better.

Meanwhile, Meeker made easy work of Rangely on Tuesday and carried off a 17-7 victory. The Cowboys haven't had any issues with the Panthers recently, as the game was their sixth consecutive win against them.

Cade Mills was a standout: he went 3-for-5 with three runs, four RBI, and one triple. He is becoming a predictor of Meeker's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is undefeated (and 2-10 when he doesn't). Joseph Halstead was another key player, getting on base in five of his six plate appearances with five RBI and two doubles.

Meeker's record is now 5-10. As for Steamboat Springs, they now have a winning record of 9-8.
