Baseball Recap: Newton County Academy Picks Up Fourth Straight Win on the Road

It can be hard to translate regular season success to the playoffs, but Newton County Academy had no problem doing just that on Thursday. Their pitcher stepped up to hand the River Oaks Mustangs a 6-0 shutout. Considering the Generals have won eight matches by more than five runs this season, Thursday's blowout was nothing new.

Not much got past Cooper Thrash, who gave up just four hits and racked up six Ks to keep River Oaks off the board. Thrash also tossed no walks, which is notable because Newton County Academy is 7-1 when he allows at most two walks, but 4-9 otherwise.

At the plate, Newton County Academy let Gaines Boyd and Bryce Jones run wild. Boyd got on base in all three of his plate appearances with two stolen bases and two runs, while Jones went 1-for-3 with one home run and two RBI. Those two stolen bases gave Boyd a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Ty Thrash, who went 2-for-3 with two stolen bases and one RBI.

Newton County Academy's win was their fourth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 11-10. Those road victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 11.8 runs over those games. As for River Oaks, they have traveled a rocky road recently, having lost five of their last six games. That's put a noticeable dent in their 15-10 record this season.

Newton County Academy will have a chance to go back-to-back against River Oaks: the pair will be back at it again later today.
