No. 1 Mater Dei (Santa Ana) looked the part in the opening round of the CIF Southern Section Division 1 playoffs. The Monarchs cruised to a 63-23 win over Bishop Amat (La Puente) as 2020 Alabama commit Bryce Young threw for nearly 400 yards and seven touchdowns while adding another one on the ground. Kody Epps broke Amon-Ra St. Brown's school record for most touchdowns in a single game (5) and for a season (23). He hauled in 11 receptions for 168 yards and five touchdowns.

Up next for the Monarchs is 11-0 Mission Viejo (Calif.) in the semifinals.

No. 2 St. John Bosco (Bellflower) had no trouble in its opening round game against Calabasas (Calif.). The Braves rolled to a 63-7 win and are one win away from advancing to the section championship for the seventh consecutive season. They have to get by an explosive Centennial (Corona) team in the semifinals.

The Inland Empire power was the only new team to join this week's Top 25 after beating JSerra Catholic (San Juan Capistrano) 56-0. The Huskies dominated on both sides of the ball racking up 573 total yards and limited the Lions to 71 yards.

No. 8 Katy (Texas) was in a very competitive first round game in the UIL Texas 6A Division 1 playoffs but escaped with a 35-28 win. The Tigers didn't take the lead until the fourth quarter and outscored Ridge Point (Missouri City) 21-7 in the second half. Jalen Davis had to fill in at running back because of injuries and had a career night, running for 219 yards and two scores on 30 carries.

Katy draws an undefeated Cy-Fair (Texas) team in the second round with a potential third-round matchup against No. 9 North Shore (Houston) looming.

No. 13 Mentor (Ohio) continued its perfect season in head coach Steve Trivisonno's final year beating McKinley (Canton) 34-13 in the second round of the Ohio Division 1 playoffs. Up next is St. Edward (Lakewood) with a spot in the semifinals on the line. The two played each other to open the 2019 season and the Cardinals won 29-28.

A couple of Top 25 teams will be playing for hardware this week.

No. 22 Corner Canyon (Draper) takes on American Fork (Utah) in the 6A state championship game on Nov. 22 at Ricce-Eccles Stadium (Salt Lake City).

No. 24 St. John's (Washington, D.C.) faces Our Lady of Good Counsel (Olney, Md.) in the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference (Capital) championship on Nov. 24 at Catholic University (Washington, D.C.).
