Basketball Recap: Widefield Falls Despite Big Games from Amari Taylor and Trevin Stemler

Widefield was the 68-56 winner over Cheyenne Mountain when they last played one another back in December of 2023, but their luck changed this time around. The Widefield Gladiators fell 55-48 to the Cheyenne Mountain Red-Tailed Hawks on Monday. While losing is never fun, the Gladiators can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Colorado basketball rankings (they are ranked 203rd, while the Red-Tailed Hawks are ranked 50th).

Despite the defeat, Widefield had strong showings from Trevin Stemler, who almost dropped a double-double with 20 points and nine boards, and Amari Taylor, who went 7-for-12 to rack up 15 points in addition to six rebounds and five assists. Stemler is also on a roll when it comes to shooting accuracy, as he's posted one of at least 50% in the last five games he's played. Tate Washington was another key player, putting up nine points.

Even though they lost, Widefield smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 16 offensive boards. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Cheyenne Mountain only two offensive rebounds.

Leading Cheyenne Mountain to victory were Cayden Cooper and Alex Treglia. Cooper went 8-for-10 en route to 17 points along with five boards and five steals, while Treglia went 8-for-18 on his way to 21 points. The dominant performance also gave Cooper a new career-high in field goal percentage (80%). Another player making a difference was James Dalsaso, who posted eight points.

This is the second loss in a row for Widefield and nudges their season record down to 9-12. As for Cheyenne Mountain, their win was their third straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 17-5.

Widefield has already played their next matchup, a 69-50 loss against Mesa Ridge on the 20th. As for Cheyenne Mountain, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next game, a 60-53 defeat against Palmer Ridge on the 19th.
