Baseball Recap: Smithfield-Selma Comes Up Short

Smithfield-Selma was not able to break out of their rough patch on Wednesday as the team picked up their 29th straight loss dating back to last season. They lost 11-3 to the Clayton Comets. The result was an unpleasant reminder to the Spartans of the 14-4 defeat they experienced in the pair's previous head-to-head fixture back in April of 2024.

Smithfield-Selma saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Cayden Gregory, who went 2-for-4 with one stolen base. Noah Harley also deserves some recognition as he scored his first run of the season.

Smithfield-Selma's loss dropped their record down to 0-13. As for Clayton, they are on a roll lately: they've won five of their last six games. That's provided a massive bump to their 8-6 record this season.

Smithfield-Selma will venture away from home to square off against Southern Wayne at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. As for Clayton, they will square off against Cleveland at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. The Comets' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Rams have averaged an impressive 8.9 runs per game this season.
