Softball Recap: Walled Lake Central Triumphs

While Walled Lake Central didn't have the best season last year (they finished 2-13), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past. They came out on top in a nail-biter against the Groves Falcons on Friday, sneaking past 6-4. That's the second time they've managed to beat them this season, as they also won 9-6 on Friday.

Walled Lake Central got a great performance from Katelynn Cole as she struck out seven batters over 4.2 innings while giving up just one earned run off three hits (and only one walk).

At the plate, Walled Lake Central let Jessica Fick and Taylor Combs run wild. Fick went 2-for-4 with two runs, one triple, and one double, while Combs went 2-for-4 with one home run and two RBI. That's the most runs Fick has posted since back in April. The team also got some help courtesy of Izabel Mehta, who went 2-for-4 with two RBI and one run.

Walled Lake Central kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 11 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least nine hits in seven consecutive contests.

Walled Lake Central pushed their record up to 7-4 with the victory, which was their third straight on the road. Those road wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 4.0 runs on average over those games. As for Groves, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 4-2.

Looking ahead, Walled Lake Central will be playing in front of their home fans against Mott at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday. The Corsairs have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 13.86 runs per game on average), something the Vikings will no doubt try to take advantage of. As for Groves, they will challenge Royal Oak at 4:30 p.m. on Monday.
