Basketball Recap: Merritt Island Comes Up Short

Merritt Island was not able to break out of their rough patch on Thursday as the team picked up their third straight loss. They were three points away from ending the streak, but they lost a 47-44 heartbreaker at the hands of the Satellite Scorpions. The Mustangs lost against the Scorpions in their previous head to head back in February, too, but the margin this time around was much closer than the 83-51 score last time.

Satellite got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Christian Mcphilamy out in front who posted 14 points and seven rebounds. The dominant performance also gave Mcphilamy a new career-high in assists (three). Another player making a difference was Jack Knight, who dropped a double-double on 14 points and 11 rebounds.

Merritt Island's record now sits at 3-7. As for Satellite, their victory was their first in the district, bumping their district record up to 1-2 and their overall record up to 5-4.

Merritt Island will have a little extra prep time after the defeat as they won't be playing again for a while. They'll take on Trinity Prep at 7:00 p.m. on January 3, 2025. As for Satellite, they didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next matchup, a 55-45 loss against Tohopekaliga on the 20th.
